Small and new, this cafe is not obvious, on the ground floor of an office block. However it does a great little Illy and, with 4 tables inside and 4 outside, offers some respite from the noisy road. Very Italian.

Dept of Coffee, 14-16 Leather Lane, EC1N (nr Chancery Lane, Farringdon)

Yum. Massive crema in top, bitter and dark shot underneath. Excellent coffee.

The environment is nice and funky too. Bare walls and floors with minimalist tables and chairs, and a couple of spaces to sit down and hide, or watch Leather Lane market go by through the floor to ceiling windows. Copies of fashion & design magazines (Wallpaper*) are available.

For some reason, populated by Australian baristas. Seems to be a theme now in London. Perfectly pleasant. See their website for more details.

Downside: coffee and sandwiches are eye-wateringly expensive.

Caffe Alba, Oxo Tower, South Thames Embankment

Good Italian cafe, run by real Italians.

Espresso is by Lavazza – which I normally find bland – but well made.

There are lots of nice seats and tables, with a few outside overlooking the Thames. If you’re walking between the London Eye and the Tate Modern, it’s one of the best places to stop for coffee.

Lovely setting, amazing-looking cakes and lovely salads & pasta. If you’re a tea-lover, all the better – it’s full of wonderful, exotic tea blends from around the world.
The coffee is also good: I would say light, but full favoured with a hint of roast nuts. Decently priced too. Friendly staff completes the package.

Great fruitcake! Only a couple of small tables (toilets, not extra seating, are found downstairs) but pretty decor and large windows mean perching on the barra looking at the quiet cobbled street outside is a pleasure. Coffee is long, good crema, and the cup is nicely heated so it keeps its warmth without burning the coffee. Lots of interesting sandwiches available.

Cafe Hill, Burgon Street, EC4 (historic Ludgate, near St Paul’s Cathedral)

Everywhere feels ancient in this twisty maze of lanes that fill the gap between St Paul’s Cathedral and Blackfriars, with the river Thames marking the southern edge. Cafe Hill is one of the small shops that are scattered between law firm offices, sandwich shops and barbers. It has two entrances – one on each side of the building – and about six small tables inside. Pleasant decor and a bright, clean layout, it’s quite a pleasant place to sit ( though no super-comfortable sofas). There’s a table on the pedestrian street outside.
The coffee is decent – 100% arabica according to the sign outside – but long and not especially remarkable.
I’d like to love this place, but unfortunately it’s average.

Can’t choose how much sugar! They only have sugar lumps, which are too large. One lump or two is the only choice.

Also: Expensive. Underwhelming coffee. Lovely shop and nice food. Just behind Jamie Oliver’s restaurant Deli near Leicester Square. Hidden, lovely square and lots of tables downstairs and up.
